Bushism for 4/25/2025 I am mindful not only of preserving executive powers for myself, but for predecessors as well. (Washington, DC, Jan 29, 2001)
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize [sic] with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon

Will be later to win

THINGS DUG UP BY DUG -- News and Views from Here and There
Al-Qa'ida Fighters On Attacks Against Americans
(English Video Excerpts)
A few weeks ago, Al-Qa'ida's website declared it would publish the wills of the May 12, 2003 suicide bombers in Riyadh.
A couple of days ago it released a new videotape which includes an audio recording of the actual attack as was apparently transmitted through a cell phone, excerpts from past speeches by Osama bin Laden, songs of incitement, a speech by Sheikh Abu Omar Muhammad Al-Seif, and the wills of the attackers, reportedly recorded on April 29, 2003, less than two weeks before the attacks.
The following are excerpts from statements by Hazem Al-Kashmiri and Muhammad bin Abd Al-Wahhab Al-Maqit which were recorded in English.
View these English excerpts here. You will need Real Player to view the video.

INTERNAL EMAIL REVEALS HALLIBURTON'S STRATEGY
TO COMBAT ACCUSATIONS OF OVERCHARGING THE GOVERNMENT
Negative publicity from the Bush administration's award of a $7 billion no-bid contract to a Halliburton subsidiary with a history of overcharging the government has led Halliburton CEO David Lesar to direct his employees to counter with a letter-writing campaign, according to an internal company e-mail provided to The Daily MisLead.

Billions Missing From Iraq Reconstruction Funds?
Iraq Rebuilding Cash 'Goes Missing'
By Bill Jacobs
The Scotsman
A new Iraq scandal erupted today as a report claimed billions of dollars earmarked for rebuilding the country have vanished after being handed to the United States-controlled governing body in Baghdad.
At least $5 billion (£3bn) has been passed to the ruling Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), a leading UK aid agency has calculated.
But only a fifth of those development funds have been accounted for, figures unearthed by Christian Aid show.
And that missing four billion dollar "black hole" will double by the end of the year unless the CPA’s accounts are made public.
The allegations emerged as British aid agencies claimed millions of pounds of government aid cash will have to be diverted from poor countries in South America, Eastern and Central Asia to rebuilding Iraq.
And they threaten to undermine a conference in Spain, where the United Nations and World Bank hopes to raise £20 billion to pay for the reconstruction of the country following the toppling of Saddam Hussein.
Prime Minister Tony Blair was today challenged by the charities to account for the missing $5bn, mainly from oil revenue, as donors conference involving 60 countries got under way in Madrid.
A spokesman for the CPA denied that the money had been lost or misused and promised that all the cash would be fully accounted for.
Then Mr Blair and US President George Bush last week won a new UN resolution calling for international contributions of money and troops. The donations will go into a new fund overseen by the UN and the World Bank.
But failure to show where the existing cash has gone will fuel suspicion among Iraqis that large amounts are being creamed off by US firms given contracts to rebuild the country, Christian Aid said.

Leaked Memo Exposes Rumsfeld's Doubts
About War on Terror
By Julian Borger
The Guardian
The US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, has admitted that Washington has no way of knowing whether it is winning or losing its "war on terror" and predicts "a long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan, in a leaked document published yesterday.
The memorandum was sent to his civilian deputies and top military officers, calling for fresh thinking in US counter-terrorist strategy. Its sober tone is a marked contrast to the upbeat assessments offered to the public by President Bush and his administration officials.
The memo was published yesterday by the USA Today newspaper, and a Pentagon official confirmed its authenticity to the Guardian, describing it as one of Mr Rumsfeld's "snowflakes" (Pentagon slang for the daily blizzard of notes he sends to his subordinates).
Yesterday's memo is addressed to Mr Rumsfeld's deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, his chief policy adviser, Doug Feith, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Dick Myers, and his deputy, General Pete Pace, and it runs through a scorecard of US military engagements to date.
"We are having mixed results with al-Qaida, although we have put considerable pressure on them -- none the less a great many remain at large," Mr Rumsfeld writes.

WORDS AND WORKS -- Poetry, Prose, Essays, Letters, Toons, Quotes and Quips
An Open Letter To America: It's Time To Take Back Our Country
by John & Elaine Mellencamp
10/22/03 (ICH)
As the echo of the war drums fades away and the angry masses calling for blood slowly disperse, we, as a nation must now confront the truth. We face the unpleasant reality of an uncertain future, compromised safety, a failing economy, and the question of how a society of otherwise reasonable citizens was systematically lied to and manipulated into backing the political "hijacking" of Iraq.
Before a single bomb was ever dropped, some of us, formerly called the "anti-American and unpatriotic," have questioned or opposed this war.
Now, each day, as the dust settles and the truth slowly surfaces, more and more people come to the inevitable conclusion of what a debacle this whole war was.
39,000 bombs later, no weapons of mass destruction uncovered, no dangerous dictators captured, no connection to Sept 11.
What have we gained but relentless media coverage of a fallen statue and some stolen oil fields -- the spoils of this misadventure. Not to mention lucrative corporate payoffs and an enormous price tag of over 80 Billion dollars . . . some tax cut.
But what have we lost?
We have lost the lives of over 300 Americans. Approximately 2 U.S. troop deaths each day, 193 deaths since the war was declared over. In total, an estimated 20,000 people have died, thus far, in this conflict.
In addition to the lives given for this effort, our nation has suffered the loss of respect within the world community, particularly the United Nations.
We have managed to squander any goodwill we once had to now succeed in solidifying our image as the globe's leading bully. Arrogant and thoughtless.
The word Democracy means literally "by the people." This is the basis of our government and society. It is what this country was founded upon and what makes us American. It is not just our "right" but also our duty to speak out and voice our thoughts and opinions.
How, then, was it possible that, in the land of freedom, those who opposed the common opinion were called"un-American?" Resentfully, we wonder.

U.N. Report: U.S. War on Terror Radicalizes Arabs
By Suleiman al-Khalidi
Mon Oct 20, 2:36 PM ET
AMMAN, Jordan (Reuters) - The U.S.-led war on terror has radicalized more Arabs angry both with the West and their autocratic rulers who are bent on curbing their political rights, a U.N.-commissioned study released Monday showed.
The Arab Human Development Report 2003 said Arab countries lagged other regions in dissemination of knowledge.
Readership of books was relatively limited, education dictated submission rather than critical thought, the Arabic language was in crisis.
The report, launched in Amman, blamed an absence of "effective and peaceful channels for dealing with injustices" for pushing radical political groups to seek change by violence.

Can we save ourselves in time?
"The times they are a-changin'," said Bob Dylan in 1963. Could he have foreseen that US citizens would lose their constitutionally guaranteed freedoms before his life was through? Can we honor
John Lennon's legacy and "Give Peace a Chance?" It's up to us to fight for our rights and for what is right. Here you'll find political
commentary, activism opportunities, views on news and more — all served with a twist, a song and a smile.

About A-Changin' Times
I'm just sittin here watchin' the wheels go 'round and 'round. I really love to watch 'em roll. No longer riding on that
merry-go-round, I just had to let it go. John Lennon
Yep. That's me, too. Watchin' the wheels and singin' outta tune. No wonder I'm dizzy most of the time!
The wheels in the world are seemingly spinning out of control. We see exponential growth in some areas, a winding down in others. There are war and
hate in one arena, love and unity in another — all born of one event. Astounding fortunes made by some, mean staggering losses for others — within
all industries — all at the same time. Earth changes are quaking the very ground beneath our feet while the sun is wreaking havoc with the weather.
This is our opportunity to change our outlook and move forward in a new way, with a willingness to release previously held ideas, let go and to open to
possibilities we might not have considered before. We will be required to use creatively what we already have in new ways, and, even if we have to
"fake it 'til we make it," it's an opportunity to learn. And it's an opportunity to take action — to let our voices be heard to make a difference, to find solutions, to make a change.
There is another way of looking at things and A-Changin' Times will provide support as we all make our way through this labyrinthine new world.
Love, peace and clarity,
Veralynne

I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS: The ACTivists, our fellow bloggers, the readers, the contributors.
ACT has gathered a group of like-minded people without whom this venture would be a lonely chore. Thanks for your contributions, all; Bill, Colleen, Leo, Raff, Johanne, all the rest and those to come, your submissions and enthusiasm are invaluable. Bloggers, your blogs and links are inspiring. Readers, your links and referrals to and recommendations of ACT to friends and family are priceless. We all know folks who could benefit from "another way of looking at things." ACT NOW to open minds and hearts during these A-Changin' Times! ACT's philosophy is not to serve as strictly a news source, but to alert, awaken, inspire and motivate readers to exercise their rights and participate in creating positive change for people everywhere.
Meet the ACTivists
Lisa contributes to ACT from her base on the East Coast of the U.S. While her "Giftedly Outspoken" tagline may have started as a joke, it has proven to be valid! Her dedication to the philosophy of living simply and leaving no footprints on the Earth will reveal itself concerning consumer and health issues, employment crises, environmental activism, animal rights and much more. Lisa is learning to live the "cultural creative" lifestyle which will become more of a necessity for our survival in the days to come. In the meantime, her knowledge of bringing issues to light for grassroots activism will serve to accomplish our goals of making required changes in Washington.
DUG is our West Coast U.S. correspondent. A long-time supporter of ACT's goals, DUG is a prolific researcher and sharer of news and views from off the beaten track. He's seen the writing on the wall for a long time and his caring and altruistic nature motivates him to make every effort to help people understand what's going on under the mainstream media radar. DUG's progressive views and nose for progressive news is much appreciated here. Blog on, DUG!
Working his universal magic from a beach base in Australia, Pip's motto, Carpe Diem or "Seize the Day!", has served him well in approaching and accomplishing his goals of reaching other people. Pip's big heart drives him to research and present information that piques the curiosity, soothes the soul, and motivates those he touches to live life fully. Often entertaining and always informative his own weblog, Wilson's Blogmanac, is a daily "must visit" for thousands around the world. We at ACT are very fortunate to have his interest and caring mastery of the blogging art, for his technical as well as spiritual support and friendship.
Also from Australia, Lucy mentors, facilitates workshops and teaches in the field of personal and spiritual growth. Lucy's background provides experience and understanding which she uses in her inspired communication of the wisdom of the cards.
A motorcycle mama, a rock and roller and a true cultural creative, Jeannine (J-9), from the heart of America, brings a brilliant sense of humor to ACT, along with her sense of justice, peace and environmental devotion. J-9 is currently facing a health challenge, and we're looking forward to her great attitude and strength bringing her back to her giving, activist self in short order. J-9 shares Veralynne's enthusiasm for using music and the "hippie" philosophy of minimal consumerism and giving, in revealing the truth and in encouraging the healing of the planet and its global rifts among nations and people.
Tell J-9 You've Read It!
Veralynne may be Owner/Editor of ACT, but she's merely the ringleader, having been blessed with the voluntary efforts of a group of very different yet like-minded people with gifts to share. Veralynne fancies herself a proud dilettante and "hippie wannabe," reaching back into America's wealth of wisdom from our recent history for philosophy and guidelines to deal with today's issues of war and peace, injustice and lack of love for our mother planet. It's very easy to be cynical these days, but with ACT, Veralynne hopes to temper the pain and confusion we feel with music, creativity, progressive participation in the political process and sharing of ideas, attitudes and ACTions.
